IMS treatment involves dry needling affected areas within the body in order to release shortened muscles, which presses on and irritates nerves. IMS uses acupuncture needles, however, IMS needling is different than acupuncture needling in that needles are inserted deep within muscle tissues, specifically targeting injured muscles that have contracted and become shortened from injury and distress. Penetration of a normal muscle is painless; however, a shortened, hypersensitive muscle will ‘grasp’ the needle and cause a cramping sensation. This results in the muscle relaxing and initiates the natural healing process for the muscle. Effects are usually experienced immediately.
